Grizzly Bears of Bute Inlet Among the narrow inlets that reach deep into the mainland coast of British Columbia, Canada, spectacular Bute Inlet cuts the deepest into the coastal mountain range. The dense forests and river estuaries of Bute are the ancestral home to the great brown bear of North America, known as the grizzly bear. The big bears live among the tall Douglas firs and the Western Red cedar that thrive along the shores of glacier fed rivers and streams teeming with fish. This prime grizzly habitat, north of the Strait of Georgia, is also the traditional land of the Homalco First Nations people. They invite you to come and visit their traditional lands and share with them the experience of their spectacular land and wildlife.
Every year in the late summer and the early fall, the bears of Bute Inlet gather on the banks of the rivers and streams to participate in one of nature's most incredible displays - the return of the Salmon! The huge Pacific salmon return from the ocean to the fresh water streams and rivers where they spawn and finally die. One of the last challenges in the life cycle of the salmon is making it past the gathering of grizzly and black bears on the river banks, preparing for the long, cold winter ahead by gorging themselves on as much fish as they can catch.
The Bears of Bute will spend nearly three months feasting on the rich red meat of Chinook, Coho, Pink and Chum salmon that all come in their own turn. Watching the Grizzlies fish, eat, live, play and fight for survival is truly a spectacular sight. We have special bear viewing platforms where our wildlife adventure bear tours can safely experience this incredible display of raw nature.
We leave at 10:00 am by boat from the Discovery Harbour dock in Campbell River. The one and a half hour trip will take you along the shorelines of the narrow waterways and past abandoned villages. Watch killer whales, porpoises, seals, sea lions, deer and eagles and other birds and marine wildlife on your journey through the Discovery Islands. You will arrive at the mouth of the Orford River where lunch is supplied. You will then be transferred to one of the specially designed viewing platforms that provide a safe area to wait and watch for the Bears of Bute. We return to Campbell River by 6:00pm. Tours are limited to 11 passengers. |
