Grizzly Bears of the Chilcotin Mountains Located 5 hours from Vancouver, the Southern Chilcotin Mountains are known for their great biodiversity. Not only in wildlife but also in flora and fauna. Each year, Naturalists from all over the world come here to admire the variety and abundance of alpine wildflowers. The Resort is nestled on the shores of glacier fed Tyaughton Lake, on the foothills of the Chilcotin Mountains. Besides Grizzly Bears, Black Bears, Moose, Mule Deer, Mountain Goats, Big Horn Sheep, Wolves, Coyotes, Mountain Lions, Lynx, and Wolverines make their living in these valleys and mountains.
In the spring, bears and other wildlife migrate to the first greened up valleys and south facing slopes to feed. With the melting of snow and the arrival of the summer some bears travel higher up to the alpine meadows. Here they can be observed digging up roots and marmots. Others remain lower and feed on cow parsnip, fireweed shoots, young clover, green grass, and insects, which they dig up from decaying stumps. But they really like berries, which grow only where sunlight can penetrate the forest cover. And this is along our trails. The big male bears called boars get the best spots. Female bears called sows, cubs, juveniles and black bears have to keep their distance. Only mothers and her cubs as well as young bears hang out together. Last year we watched 2 young bears for hours, which seemed to be glued together, they were never more than 10 feet apart. Our grizzlies are mountain bears and differ from their brown cousins on the coast in appearance and habits. Mountain bears have a longer and thicker back silvery fur. These are called silver tip grizzlies. We have never observed them eating fish. Some, we are led to believe, are strictly vegetarian. One visited us last year while we were having a BBQ on the lake. We abandoned our salmon and steaks and let him have it all. The only thing he was interested in was the corn on the cob and the green lettuce. Bears like to travel along shores and we follow them quietly in boats or canoes. They also like to swim, floating with all four paws in the air, or play with submerged sticks.
The largest log lodge in the West is romantically nestled on the shores of Tyaughton Lake with views of snow-covered peaks. The lodge rooms feature private bath, balcony and scenic lake view. The lakeside log chalets feature two/three bedrooms, living room, fireplace, kitchen and a private beach with canoe. We offer a wide array of activities including western horseback riding, fly fishing, fly casting, mountain biking on gentle rolling or challenging single track, floatplane adventures over the Chilcotin Wilderness and drop off’s at remote alpine lakes; as well as ATV leading to the wildflower carpeted alpine meadows. There are tennis and volleyball courts, children’s playground, horse stable, outdoor hot tub and sauna. Enjoy sunbathing, boating and swimming at our sandy beach. Join us at a lakeside BBQ with campfire and singing cowboy. The Resort is accessible by vehicle year round. For fly-in or van pick up from Vancouver, Whistler and other locations, please contact us. |
