 MC#03 The Northwest Territories
Day Routing
01 Edmonton
Depart home city to Edmonton, the “City of Champions” and transfer to your downtown hotel. Time permitting; spend the evening visiting West Edmonton Mall – the largest entertainment and shopping centre in the world. Accommodation: Thornton Court Hotel or Sheraton Grande Hotel
02 Edmonton – High Level
Our tour begins as we travel north watching the scenery change from prairie grasslands to lakes and boreal forests. Enroute we visit the Rochfort Bridge Trading Post, and we stop at Mile “0” of the MacKenzie Highway, the only highway to the North West Territories. (B) Accommodation: Flamingo Inn
03 High Level – Fort Providence
This morning we reach the 60th Parallel Border Crossing into the North West Territories, a land that is basically untouched. As we enter the North West Territories we will travel the highway dubbed the “Waterfalls Route”. A stop is made at the magnificent Alexander Falls and the picturesque Louise Falls. Upon arrival in Hay River, a local tour guide will board our coach for a guided tour of the “Hub City”. Enroute to Fort Providence, we stop at the spectacular Lady Evelyn Falls. Tonight following a great north dinner, we will enjoy a demonstration by a local Dene artisan. (D) Accommodation: Snowshoe Inn
04 Fort Providence - Yellowknife
Passing through the Mackenzie Bison Sanctuary, home of a free-ranging herd of wood bison, you have a good chance of seeing these huge animals grazing along the road. You will notice a dramatic change in the landscape as we travel across the Precambrian Shield to Yellowknife, the capital of Canada’s vast Northwest Territories. Upon arrival in Yellowknife, you will enjoy an afternoon boat cruise along the shores of Great Slave Lake. This evening, please join your tour director for a traditional “Welcome to Yellowknife” Dinner. (L, D) Accommodation: Fraser Tower Suite Hotel
05 Yellowknife
Wake up to the sights and sounds of Yellowknife. Today we will be taken on a guided tour of the city to learn about the culture, people and history of the area. Our tour will include the Legislative Assembly Building, the Husky Dog Kennels, a tour of Old Town and the famed Ragged Ass Road. This afternoon is at leisure to visit the many local craft stores and galleries, or you may wish to take an optional Air Flight Tour for a sky view of Yellowknife and the Diamond Mines. (B)
06 Yellowknife
Our day begins with a guided tour of the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. Of course, no tour to this area would be complete without a stop at the Wildcat Café and some leisure time in “Old Town”.
07 Yellowknife – High Level
