| Day 01 - 04 |
This is the ultimate adventure! Ride into the backcountry like an explorer with packhorses in tow. Travel the mountains in nomadic style, seeing new scenery each day. Follow game trails, cross wild rivers, and ride through valleys echoing with the whistles of scurrying marmots. Enjoy open-air lunches with the world's best views.
There's a lot to do on the first day. We take care in matching you with your Cayuse horse and saddle. All the "kinks" are worked out during your extensive orientation to western mountain riding that includes our gymkhana and our River Ride. That evening, maps and itineraries, and what to pack in your personal duffel bag are reviewed. Then, it's a hardy Ranch dinner with your riding friends.
During your high alpine adventure, you'll see sweeping mountain top vistas, turquoise green glaciers and snow caves. Abundant wildlife live in these mountains, including mountain goats, bighorn sheep, mule deer, moose, wolf, Grizzlies and black bear. We view them at every opportunitythrough spotting scopes. There's so much to learn about wildlife habits and the wilderness.
Travel mountaintop passes once used by pioneers and later for prospectors. Experience the wide U shaped valleys with their mosaic of wildflowers, wild hay meadows and big-game mineral licks.
There's even plenty of time for fishing (licenses available on site), gold panning, and exploring ancient geological features. If your main interestis fishing, let us know and we'll select your camp according to lake or stream interests.
For those that wish to spend some time in an overnight alpine camp, but don't necessarily come with enough riding experience to head into the mountains right away, the Ranch Stay followed by a Pack Trip is a popular combination.
Accommodation is on the Ranch, the first and last night, and one of our alpine camp(s) mid stay. The last morning at the Ranch you can participate in one of our Activity Options. There's target practice, horse logging, bareback lessons and more.
Access in and out of camp is a 6-8 hour horse ride with elevation changes of up to 1,000 m. Daily itineraries vary according to the level of trip and group interests.
A Special Horse! Not just any horse can take our riders safely and reliably through the mountains. Our horses are sure-footed Mountain Cayuse horses from the Cariboo-Chilcotin where the wild herds still roam. The Chilcotin Mountain Cayuse is not a thoroughbred, but a mixture of breeds that have developed over many generations. They have stamina and toughness, lots of energy, intelligence and a good disposition. They are patient and gentle with small children, yet spirited enough for experienced riders. Whatever your age or riding experience, we have just the horse for you. |
