| RBC#07 Chilco, Chilkotin & Fraser River |
| Day 0 |
| The expedition departure city for Canada's Classic 6-day Rafting Expedition is Williams Lake, British Columbia. We will gather for a pre-trip orientation meeting on the eve of our expedition departure. Here we will meet our expedition leader and fellow travelers. We will review the trip logistics and help everyone prepare for our weeklong journey. Overnight in Williams Lake ( not included ) |
|
| Day 01 |
| With an early departure from Williams Lake, we take a scenic charter flight through the Coastal Mountains to the pristine Chilko Lake. This is where we meet our guides and fully equipped rafts. From the mouth of the Chilko River we meander through the crystal clear water and find ourselves leaving the Coastal Mountains and entering the Chilcotin Plateau. We will find our campsite in amongst a pine forest. After a delicious dinner, the guides will go over camp procedures for the entire week. |
|
| Day 02 |
| Today is our first day of white water. Prior to departure we go over in detail all river, paddling, swimming and safety procedures. After setting off down the river, we will practice these skills before reaching the famous Lava Canyon (Class 4) one of the biggest and longest rapids of this journey. Within Lava Canyon we will spend two hours running rapids such as the White Mile, Eagles Claw, May Tag, and Bidwell. There will be a safety kayaker accompanying our rafts through all Class 4 rapids. At the end of the rapids, we float to our riverside ranch camp and celebrate the completion of our first rapids. |
|
| Day 03 |
Today we float through some of the oldest rangeland in Canada. We meet the Chilcotin River shortly after sliding through a narrow twenty-foot Gap Rapid. Most of the day is spent relaxing and the more energetic guest can learn to row a raft through the flatter sections of the Chilcotin River.
After lunch we reach an old trading post named Hanceville. Hanceville is located next to the Chilcotin River, in the heart of the Chilcotin Plateau. In the early afternoon we challenge some safe and fun roller coaster rapids named "the Goosenecks" in Hanceville Canyon. We might spot a black bear and we will see bald headed eagles and ospreys. We will camp in the middle of Hanceville Canyon. There is an opportunity to hike up into caves in the canyon wall that also provide beautiful vistas of the surrounding river canyon. |
|
| Day 04 |
After breakfast we will finish running Hanceville Canyon and spend a relaxing morning drifting down the river. In the afternoon we will camp at the confluence of the Chilcotin River and Big Creek. The camp is in the Big Creek Ecological Preserve. This gives us the opportunity to have a bar-b-q lunch.
After lunch we can fish in the many pools in Big Creek, hike to a volcanic rocky outcrop, or relax with a book. The hike takes us up three river benches to a rocky outcrop with panoramic views of both the Chilcotin and Big Creek Canyons. After some appetizers, we will have another fantastic dinner and get some rest. |
|
| Day 05 |
Today is one of the best white water days in British Columbia. Upon departure we immediately enter the exciting Big Creek Rapids. We stop after a series of continuous Class 3 rapids above a Class 4-drop named "The Farwell Canyon Rapid." While scouting the rapids we will explore and interpret paintings left on rock faces by local First Nations at the turn of the 20th Century. We will also see evidence of California Bighorn Sheep. From this day point forward there are increasing amounts of Bighorn that will be spotted from the river.
After scouting, we will run the Farwell Canyon Rapids. The afternoon will be spent completing the last leg of the Chilcotin River. We run a series of Class 3 rapids before entering "Big John Canyon." In the heart of the canyon lies "Railroad Rapids." Railroad Rapids is a continuous Class 4 wave train that stretches over one mile. Upon exiting the rapids, the Chilcotin joins the mighty Fraser River.
We will camp below the Junction of the Chilcotin and Fraser. A farewell celebration will provide an opportunity to share stories and plan future adventures. |
|
| Day 06 |
The last day of our six-day trip is spent floating down the Fraser River. The river is ten times larger that the Chilcotin. The river shore features sagebrush and hoodoos with Bighorn sheep curiously peering at our rafts as we float by.
By mid morning we will reach the Junction of the Fraser River and Churn Creek. This is where we take a short shuttle to Williams Lake. This route takes us past an old World War 2 air force base, and has spectacular views of the Fraser Canyon.
In Williams Lake, we will check into our hotels. Later that evening we will get together for a post trip dinner at a local restaurant to celebrate new friends and experiences. Overnight in Williams Lake (not included). |
