Bobbie Burns Lodge is located 194 km (120 miles) west of Banff, nestled in the Purcell Mountains The spectacular, still little climbed Bobbie Burns Range takes its name from the great Scottish poet. ("Gie me ae spark o' Nature's fire," he wrote, "That's a' the learning I desire." The old silver and gold miners who chipped away in these great peaks were a surprisingly bookish, nature-loving lot.) Exploration of the Bobbie Burns began with a survey party in the early 1900s. Decades later the great J. Monroe Thorington, author of the classic “Where the Clouds Can Go” and “A Climber's Guide to the Canadian Rockies” did the first serious climbing in the range. A quote from Thorington might well serve as our motto: "We were not pioneers ourselves, but we journeyed over old trails that were new to us, and with hearts open. Who shall distinguish?" Like most of our lodges, Bobbie Burns accommodates 44 Heli-Hikers and climbers, in this case in 24 double/twin rooms, all with private bath. Bobbie Burns has a view-rich outdoor whirlpool, a climbing wall, sauna, games room, shop, and a big, welcoming fireplace in our exceptionally homey common area. Its extensive wine cellar is certainly one of the world's best in a wilderness lodge.

We pick you up early in the morning from your hotel in Banff and drive west, through two glorious national parks, snacking along the way. We arrive at our helipad at about 9:30 for the first helicopter flight to the Bugaboo Lodge. Upon arrival we are greeted by the lodge manager, outfitted with boots, day packs, rain gear, etc., and settle into our rooms. At noon, we gather in the lodge dining room for lunch, meet the staff, and have a briefing on the next few days. After a helicopter safety talk, we climb in and soar up for an afternoon of getting acquainted with the High Country. In the late afternoon, our chopper picks us up and it's back to the lodge for hors d'oeuvres, soft drinks, tea, and good old Canadian mountain water. Our casual gourmet dinner, served family style, will be at 7:00 (save room for our pastry chef's latest inspiration). Then some camaraderie by the fire, maybe a sauna or whirlpool, and a great night's sleep.

You might want to join the optional morning stretch, or sleep a little later. Breakfast is at 8:00. The first helicopter leaves at 9:00 (the aircraft seats 11 guests and a guide), making the short but dramatic trip to the timberline. The landscapes in which we spend our days are knock-down, world-class gorgeous and varied, and there is probably no other place on earth where you can experience such wildness and solitude without lugging a 40-pound backpack. Enjoy great hiking, picnicking, a little learning about glacial landscapes and their hardy life-forms, and lots of fun accomplished, we fly back at day's end to the lodge for (depending on our mood) a massage (not included in the base price, but well worth the cost), a browse in the lodge shop, a game of chess, a go at the lodge climbing wall, a cocktail on the deck as alpen-glow bathes the peaks we've been communing with, dinner, storytelling in the living room, and another great night's sleep.
