West Canada’s Best Hiking Tours
British Columbia / Alberta Guided Hiking Tours within Wells Gray Park, Mt.Robson, Rocky Mountain National Parks of Banff, Jasper, Yoho, the Chilcotin, Coast Mountains and Whistler.
World Heritage Site, Mount Assiniboine is the most dominant peak of the Southern Canadian Rockies, rising 3618 m. Themountain bears a striking resemblance to Switzerland’s Matterhorn, hence the nickname “the Matterhorn of the Rockies”. It is located between Banff National Park and Kootenay National Park, and 48 km southwest of Banff. In 1885 G.M. Dawson of the Dominion Geological Survey saw the mountain from afar and dubbed it Mount Assiniboine; it took 8 more years (1893) until someone actually reached the mountain. In 1901, British climber James Outram made the first ascent of Mount Assiniboine. Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park was established in 1922.

Our multi-day backpacking trip offers spectacular views of Mount Assiniboine. The trip involves a helicopter flight into Mt. Assiniboine where we will stay in a backcountry hut. From there we will enjoy day hikes around a choice of destinations including Lake Magog, Sunburst Lake, Elizabeth Lake, Cerulean Lake, Wonder Pass, Windy Ridge, the Nub. The trails offer vast attractions including boreal forests of spruce with stands of alpine fir and lodgepole pine; alpine meadows with wonderfully bright wildflowers; wildlife such as elk, black and grizzly bears, mule deer, moose, goats, and big horn sheep; and 93 different species of birds have been identified in the park. Join us in July or August, when the alpine wildflowers are in full bloom.

Our trips are scheduled with low guest to guide ratios ensuring that you get the most out of your experience. All guides are certified hiking guides with the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides and have advanced wilderness first aid and professional interpretation courses. We follow hiking techniques designed for minimal impact on the environment and believe strongly in the philosophy of “leave only footprints, take only pictures”. We endeavour to promote an atmosphere that is exciting, educational and enjoyable!
The Matterhorn of the Rockies - Mt. Assiniboine
Day 6 Day Mt. Assiniboine Hiking Tour
01
Individual Arrival. Our guide will meet the group in Calgary for a brief welcome and introduction. Afterwards enjoy a scenic drive to Mount Shark Helipad, 50 kms south of Canmore. We’ll go over the trip and check that everybody is properly outfitted. After registration we then fly by Helicopter to Assiniboine Provincial Park, where we set-up our base camp. The Huts were built by the Alpine Club of Canada in 1925. These are basic, rustic one-room huts for camping that are approximately 3x4 metres in size. The huts have rustic plywood double bed bunks as well as single bed bunks supplied with camping mattresses. In the afternoon we are heading on our first hike to explore and get familiar with the area.
02 - 05
Every Day we hike to different destinations within the Provincial Park including: Wonder Pass, The Nublet and Cerulean Lake, Windy Ridge Viewpoint, Og Pass and Og Lake, Mt. Cautley. Day hikes are ranging between 8 and 16 kms. Wilderness scenery in the park is as beautiful as any in the Canadian Rockies - jagged peaks, shimmering lakes, glistening glaciers and sun-dappled alpine meadows. A score of peaks in the park exceed 2,700 metres. Mount Assiniboine, Mount Magog, Mount Sturdee, The Marshall and Lunette Peak all touch or exceed 3,100 metres. Crystal Clear Lakes dot the park. The largest, Lake Magog, lies at the northern foot of Mount Assiniboine. Boreal forests of spruce, intermixed with stands of alpine fir and lodgepole pine, cover the lower elevations. In more open areas, scattered patches of false azalea, buffalo berries, twinberries, white rhododendrons and occasionally, red elder may be found.
