This adventure package was designed to give those travelers in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, passing through by car, an amazing opportunity to get off the highways and crowded park trails for a few days, and deeper into the nature of the Canadian wilderness. We will hike back into the secluded and remote backcountry, seldom visited by anybody, on an adventure packed with rugged and beautiful nature, spectacular views, and many native cultural and interpretive activities along the way.
Your experience will begin with your arrival to the picturesque mountain retreat, located ideally 1 hours southwest of Banff in the remote, relatively untravelled wilderness in between Banff National Park, Kootenay National Park, Mt. Assiniboine Provincial Park, Height of the Rockies Provincial Park, and the Rocky Mountain Trench. Our first night will be spent in the comfort of these cabins with a hot meal, an evening opening ceremony, a cozy campfire, and a soak in our outdoor, wood-fired hot tub, complete with amazing views across the Kootenay Valley.
Bright and early the next morning we head out for a two-night backpacking adventure to the spectacular Marvel Pass, on the remote edges of Banff National Park and Mt. Assiniboine Provincial Park. We will camp beside Aurora Lake, beneath the twin peaks of Mt. Aurora, and overlooking the gorgeous pass below, strewn with meadows of wildflowers and lovely alpine lakes, often visited by deer, elk, and bear, and guarded over at the northern end by the majestic giant Mt. Assiniboine, the sixth highest mountain in Canada, and the famous "Matterhorn of the Rockies". There certainly will be plenty to marvel at.
Once up in this mountain playground, we will explore the pass and the many hidden treasures it has to offer, and participate in some fun, native cultural and wilderness activities to help bring us closer to nature and add to your Canadian wilderness experience. These activities are designed by us, some with the help of native elders, and not offered anywhere else. They may include map and compass navigation, native spirituality, wilderness skills building, and native craft sessions.
This adventure will be a memorable stop-over on any tour through the Canadian Rocky Mountains, allowing you to powerfully experience nature outside the car and off the busy park trails as well, in a secluded and remote setting in the heart of the main ranges of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. It aims to be a unique, informative, exciting, and fun way to experience the Canadian wilderness, and truly discover some amazing places your tracks can lead. |

Friday Bright and early, we gather for breakfast and a briefing on some standard wilderness safety procedures, including bear safety. We then set out with our backpacks for the Marvel Pass trailhead and begin our ascent up to the pristine Aurora Lakes. We begin the climb up the trail, only recently reopened by us, beside the picturesque stepped waterfalls of Aurora Creek, then move higher into scree slopes, boulder fields, and hanging valleys up to Marvel Pass. One last small climb above the pass to Aurora Lakes brings us to our base camp beneath the towering cliffs of Mt. Aurora, and with the spectacular view down the pass and to the snow-capped peaks beyond. After setting up our base camp and tents, a short jaunt up to the mountain saddle behind Mt. Aurora, or a nature walk through the meadows or around the lake, kindles our adventurous spirits for tomorrow. |

Saturday Waking with the sun burning bright on Mt. Gloria across the pass, we gather for a delicious breakfast and a Rising Sun ceremony on the mountain based on native traditions to develop focus, meaning, and respect for the special day which is about to unfold. We then set out for the high shoulder above Marvel Lake to catch an amazing view of the giant Mt. Assiniboine, towering above the pristine blue Gloria Lake. The meadows will be strewn with hundreds of colorful wildflowers, the water will calmly highlight the valley floors with their clear, blue-green color, and the elk, deer, or bear, may even pass within eyesight through the meadows, alongside the cheerful chirping of the curious, golden-mantled ground squirrels. We will enjoy lunch on the trail then continue our exploration or spend the afternoon with activity, which could include a map and compass navigation session, native spirituality, nature awareness activities, or native crafts and skills building. After our evening meal back at the base camp, we close off our journey with the amazing experience of a native talking circle before bed. |
