WCX#01 Wells Gray Park Ski Touring
Day 01
You meet us in Clearwater and drive to the snocat on Wells Gray Road. After a 45-minute cat ride, you skin up for the 2-4 hour ski into the Trophy Chalet. This is a rather steep ascent, as you will be gaining about 1500 feet in approximately 4 km. When you get to the chalet at 7000 feet, you will be greeted by the most spectacular setting for a mountain cabin that you have ever seen! After a nice lunch, and a bit of time settling in, the guide will take you on a tour of the terrain behind the chalet where we will do a practice search with our avalanche transceivers and begin learning about present snow conditions. We will finish the day with an exhilarating run from the open alpine slopes to the widely spaced trees through fluffy powder. Now we head to the chalet for a well-deserved supper and sauna.
Day 02
You climb to the top of Lookout Peak for a view of the Cariboo, Monashee and Rocky Mountains. The guide will start the morning with a discussion of route finding in avalanche terrain. Everyone will have a turn at picking the best routes throughout the day. Then we will start practising the different methods of evaluating slope stability. We will try to sharpen our awareness of changing conditions, and as we do, will reassess snow conditions by one or more of the methods that we are learning. After a snack, we head north for the Ptarmigan ridge and take advantage of its beautiful unbroken slope and consistent fall line for some great turns.
Day 03 - 04
After Day 2, you should all have a better idea of what type of slope you are ready for. As we head deeper into the Trophy Range, you will practice your skiing technique on the slopes that are the most challenging for you. Now that you have refreshed your memory in route finding and slope stability, you will practice them continually for the rest of our trip. Hopefully, by the time you head home, you will be ready for a great season of safe backcountry travel!
Day 05
After a great breakfast and a few morning runs, we pack up and head out. It should take us about 3 hours to ski to our vehicles.
